Another day, another cool sandwich contest. This time, TLC has paired with Panera Bread for a “create your own sandwich” event, with a bunch of cool prizes. First place is $10,000 cash, a $500 Panera gift card, free Panera bagels for a year, and your creation will be featured at Panera Bread locations nationwide. All entries will be judged (on a meticulous scoring system, with “taste appeal” and “creativity of sandwich” being the main factors) and twenty finalists will be submitted to the public for voting.

It’s a fun idea, and it’s worth trying if only to see how many cool ingredients Panera offers. Like the People’s Burger at Red Robin, I’ve thrown my hat into the ring with the Fusion Chicken Satay Focaccia. I tried to translate some of my favorite Thai food into a grilled sandwich, with a blend of Eastern and Western vegetables. Obviously, the very concept of a sandwich is somewhat rare in Pacific Asian cuisine (the Bahn Mi notwithstanding), but I feel like I did it justice.

I’d encourage everyone to enter, and be sure to post your recipes in the comments here. Voting starts Oct. 22, I’ll be sure to remind everyone. A lot. Too much, probably.

Red Robin is running a really cool contest over on a new website, The People’s Burger.  It’s a variation on the sandwich creator program offered on Burger King’s website, albeit with Red Robin signature ingredients.  The key difference, and the part that makes this so cool, is that after creating your burger, you name and post it for people to vote on.  The winner, selected through a combination of votes and a professional judges’ panel, will receive an iPad, a party where their burger will be served, and free Red Robin for a year.  Emphasis is placed on creativity and use of name and description to explain the concept of the burger.

I for one am super excited about this contest.  The sheer number of options is great, as well as the naming and description sections.  I’ve thrown my hat into the ring with the “A Cut Above” Burger, which I encourage everyone to vote for.  At the same time, you guys should all check out the site, and if you make your own, be sure to post the link in the comments section.  If a great new burger is born from this contest, we all win.

But just so you know, mine would taste REALLY good.

EDIT: Some details on the site:

  • You don’t need to register or enter any personal info to vote, so don’t worry about that.
  • You can vote once a day per IP address for as many different burgers as you please, but you can’t vote for any specific burger more than once per day.
  • That Ron Swanson burger in the lead is hilarious.  I am totally cool with that winning.

Before we get started, I’d like to thank my aunt for her generosity in helping to fund Sandwichtalk.  Thanks Aunt Kathy!!!

Burger King has always favored larger, more expensive burgers and combos, and their latest line is no exception.  The Steakhouse XT (short for “extra thick”)  Burgers feature a huge, 7 oz. patty and a number of “Steakhouse” accoutrements (like the Arby’s Steakhouse Sub, these sandwiches don’t seem to understand that steak is a specific kind of meat, as opposed to a meaningless adjective).  There are several to choose from, but I settled on the Smoky Cheddar, given that it’s a Limited Time Offer.

The sandwich does live up to its “extra thick” moniker.  The patty is enormous, with a seasoning that adds an interesting, almost steak-like flavor.  The cheese and bacon are fine, as is the A1 sauce.  A lot of the sandwich is made up of the lettuce and tomatoes, which are piled high.  It’s tasty, but definitely a mouthful.  Don’t order it without a pretty big appetite.

The combo costs about $6.50, with the other XTs being comparably priced.  It’s actually pretty reasonable given just how much food you’re getting.  I’d recommend this burger, but not to the faint of heart (or stomach).

P.S.  Not entirely sandwich-related, but Burger King is running their 50/50 scratch off contest again, this time with a Twilight theme.  This contest is quite the deal, in terms of getting free drinks, cheeseburgers, and other value menu items.  I’d highly recommend checking it out.

The title about sums it up.  To commemorate the opening of their 1000th location, Jimmy John’s is holding a contest giving away a gift card worth 1000 subs.  Here’s the lowdown:

  1. Visit and become a fan.
  2. Enter your name, email, and phone number by April 30th to be entered in the drawing.
  3. ?????

The prize is actually a $5,000 Jimmy John’s gift card, worth about 1,000 subs.  Ten runners-up will receive a check for $200.  The contest is only open to residents of the Continental U.S.  I’ve already entered, and I would recommend you all do the same thing.

Although chips, cookies, etc. are not addressed in the contest, I'm pretty sure 5K buys you plenty of those too.

P.S.  If anyone hears of any other sandwich contests/giveaways, be sure to let me know.  I don’t have a vested interest in promoting Jimmy John’s or anything, it’s just a cool contest I heard about today.
